Celebrating Respectful Maternity Care in Malawi

Spread the love

On July 1, 2023, Seed Global Health and the midwifery-led ward at the Limbe Health Center in Limbe, Malawi organized a special event called the Maternity Open Day to raise awareness about respectful maternity care. The event took place at the Kapeni Demonstration School Grounds near the Limbe Health Center.

Communities have an important role to play in advocating for safe and respectful maternity care.

Mrs. Lennie Kamwendo, a retired midwife and founder of the Association of Malawian Midwives, was the guest of honor.

During the Maternity Open Day, partners provided sexual and reproductive health services for women. These services included check-ups for pregnant mothers, HIV and cervical cancer testing, and family planning counseling. A total of 215 women received these much-needed services, and those who needed follow-up treatment received appropriate care. It was a day filled with learning, support, and care for women and families.

A male participant learns about the lifesaving benefits of kangaroo mother care, which is an evidence-based method for keeping pre-term babies warm after birth, and can be provided by both mothers and fathers.

The event’s success was made possible with the help of crucial organizations like Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), Global Aids Interfaith Alliance (GAIA), and Developed Medical Imaging (DMI). Together, the partners ensured the Maternity Open Day was a great achievement.

The theme of the day was “Respectful Maternity Care: A right for all women and babies.” Everyone agreed that every woman and baby deserves to be treated with respect during pregnancy and childbirth.

Event participants advocate for respectful maternity care.

This wonderful event made a significant impact on many women’s lives and spread the crucial message of respectful maternity care. Let’s commend the amazing people who made it all happen and continue to support mothers, babies, and families.
