We have lost an extraordinary leader in our field, champion for health equity, civil rights activist, mentor, colleague, and a dear friend. A professor at the George Washington University, Dr. Fitzhugh Mullan has had a remarkable career in medicine and health policy and has helped pioneer the global health workforce field.

For Seed Global Health, Fitz has always been a trailblazer. With roots in the National Health Service Corps and international health policy, his work helped forge the path for ours, including as part of the Global Health Service Partnership with the US Peace Corps, and our launch as an international health service corps starting in 2013.

He served as our Founding Board Chair and has been a Senior Advisor since our inception. Fitz’s work on health workforce migration and brain drain, as the PI of the MEPI Coordinating Center helping PEPFAR to scale up and strengthen medical education and training institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, and in mapping the faculty shortages in medical schools in sub-Saharan Africa, has been foundational for our field.

Most significantly though, he has been a mentor and trusted friend. Fitz has cheered this team through our triumphs, our challenges, and our new vision for 2019 and onward. He has advocated for us, advised us, lifted usand he has celebrated us every step of the way.

Today, and always, we will celebrate Fitz and his incredible legacy. Fitz, you will live on in all of our work.

Thank you.
